Environmentally speaking, plastic is actually the better option. Glass is heavy, and so takes 3x more energy than plastic to produce and ship. Furthermore, glass is breakable, and sometimes during shipping glass bottles can break, resulting in wasted product and wasted glass. Glass production also creates 3x the air pollution and greenhouse gasses, as well as 40% more environmental waste as compared with plastic production. If you’re buying a plastic bottle of coke, remember to consume it quickly, and then recycle the bottle immediately. Do not reuse it as a beverage container, as there are concerns that the re-use of plastic bottles leach chemicals into their contents.
