Is it better for the environment to have reptiles as pets rather than mammals?

I would say it is better to have mammals, mainly because shelters are too often overcrowded with them and underfunded. Dogs in particlar are put down because there are not enough owners.  Reptiles have an easier time surviving in the wild, and pet stores have an easier time taking care of them because they do not require the attention a cat or dog needs.  Moreover, mammals have shown to provide far better companionship, and that contributes to positive mental health and and positive lifestyle.
