It depends on the pet store, and what sort of animal you’re buying. Especially with exotic pets like reptiles and amphibians, it’s usually a much better idea to get them from a breeder if you can. Exotics in pet stores are often captured directly from the wild, putting a strain on their populations. Furthermore, they can carry diseases or otherwise be less healthy. The pet trade can be a real problem for many species, and by going through breeders you can circumvent damage to the wild population.
