Is it better for the environment to buy your pets from private breeders or from pet stores?

It depends on the pet store, and what sort of animal you’re buying. Especially with exotic pets like reptiles and amphibians, it’s usually a much better idea to get them from a breeder if you can. Exotics in pet stores are often captured directly from the wild, putting a strain on their populations. Furthermore, they can carry diseases or otherwise be less healthy. The pet trade can be a real problem for many species, and by going through breeders you can circumvent damage to the wild population.
