Burning pine trees and pine needles emits chemicals known as alkaloids, which in high enough doses can act as poisons to humans and animals, and can act as contaminants in groud water. Further testing will be necessary to determine effects, but in general cooler, smoldering fires produce more alkaloids, which is typical of forestry service controlled burns.
