I, too, often wonder about this one. It is generally accepted that this popping noise comes from gasses escaping from our joints. We have a synovial fluid between our joints that acts as a lubricant. In this fluid is oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. When we quickly stretch a joint capsule, these gas bubbles are released. As long as you are not experiencing pain, it is not an issue if your joints pop. Some studies have shown, however, that repetitive knuckle cracking can lead to some damage to the soft tissue of the joint or a weak grip.
