Is it bad for human health to use cow poop to heat their homes?

That depends on how the exhaust is treated. Cow poop, like other unrefined fuels, releases a lot of particulate matter (soot, dust, etc.) and other pollutants into the air. Particulate matter is a lung irritant, and can cause numerous respiratory problems. Specially designed stoves/furnaces can help to reduce people’s exposure to particulate matter and other pollutants. Unfortunately, many people who use cow poop as fuel do not have access to this technology and simply burn it in the middle of their homes, which can be extremely harsh on the lungs.
