Various sources recommend not leaving a refrigerator in the place of direct sunlight. The heat from the sun works against the cold inside the refrigerator. The optimal locations to place your refrigerator would be away from any heat sources including heaters, ovens, and the like.
Yes it is energy inefficient to have a refrigerator located in direct sunlight. Despite the fact that the refrigerator is closed, it still warms up on the outside. This causes the atmosphere inside the refrigerator to warm as well. To combat the warming, the frig must use more energy in the form of electricity. This ultimately costs the owner money and everyone in higher carbon emissions.
