Is it bad to continue using a brita filter after the light has turned red?

Beyond the obvious fact that it is probably no longer filtering the tap water. It seems like the water coming from the old brita filter may taste worse than the regular tap water now. Is that possible?

It sounds like what’s happening is your water filter as reached the maximum capacity of what it can hold. When that happens, the filter can begin “dumping” the contaminants it was holding into your source of “clean filtered” water. If this is the case, then yes, the water the expired filter is turning out is indeed worse than your regular tap water.

Still, there’s no way to tell what the quality of your water is without having an expert test a sample of it. Here’s the good news, you can usually have this done for free! You can find a certified specialist in your area at and I strongly urge you to do so! Consuming contaminated water can be harmful to your health in many different ways, and when it comes to your health, it really is best to error on the side of caution!
