Many time it is colder at night because the sun goes down. But based on the fact that there are warm fronts and cold fronts that move across the world, sometimes that is not the case. It is also warmer at night sometimes when there are clouds. The clouds help to keep air from escaping into the atmosphere and keeps it close to the ground.
generally yes. the sun is not beating down on the surrounding area and warming the air. the best example of this is in deserts, where during the day temperatures can be excruciatingly hot, but at night it can drop to freezing.
