It may be too late to prevent the sea level from rising. With the polar icecaps gradually melting, the rise in sea level is inevitable. A December 2009 article in US News reported that many countries have taken measures to prevent flooding and flood-related problems. This is the equivalent of treating the symptoms, rather than the cause, of an incurable illness.
Preventative measures for dealing with rising sea levels are varied in efficacy and cost. One solution would be to build dykes and sea wall levees in areas with a risk of flooding. Another would be to raise the height of coastal buildings and cities, or design buildings to adapt to flood conditions (such as being able to float).
