Both; in nature, pure native iron does occur, but it is very rare. Iron, an element, usually combines with other things in nature, and those ores are what we mine to derive pure iron – which in turn is often alloyed with other things for the final end use.
Iron’s symbol on the periodic table is Fe. And as rigibson said, pure forms of iron are rarely found in nature (with the exception of being found in meteorites); therefore, we mostly extract it. We use iron to create steel, which is basically iron and carbon.
