Is international shipping a major source of pollution?

Any kind of shipping will pollute our water and air. The pollution produced affects our climate as well as our own health. The exhaust fumes from ships eject sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide, and black carbon into the air.

Did you know that the 15 biggest ships emit as much sulphur oxide pollution as all cars combined? Yikes.

That article is one that I’ve been referencing a lot lately. We need to make a distinction between carbon emissions and pollution. While cars emit a lot of carbon, the actually pollution they produce is relatively scarce. That is because only the best drilled oil gets used for cars and trucks. The rest (with much higher amounts of pollution particles) is used for ships.
