In 2001 the New York Times published this story about a couple living off-the-grid near Ukiah California. They lived in a yurt powered by photovoltaic cells – that is, solar power. A lot can certainly change in ten years, but it looks like the Ukiah city proper is powered by a municipally owned power company. This could be a good direction to look if you want to get truly off the grid.
