Yes. In Oct. 2002 it was reported after an eight-month Human Society of the United States (HSUS) investigation that there is still a thriving market for the illegal trade of elephant ivory. Their investigation uncovered ivory trade in countries such as the United States. Confusing US laws allow ivory markets to continue to thrive in San Francisco, New York, on the internet and at craft shows in Virginia. The markets today, like when the ivory ban was put into place in 1989, still has harsh effects on the elephants who supply the ivory.
