a good rule of thumb fr modern technology is two hours of driving for every hour of highway driving or three hours for a full charge.
The time it takes for an electric vehicle to charge really depends on the type of battery it is using. The 2011 Chevrolet Volt hybrid is estimated to take three hours to charge, the Volt has a Lithium Ion battery. Batteries for electric vehicles are still in the development stage where researches are trying to develop more efficient batteries capable of charging faster and having a larger capacity for storage. The charging times vary for each electric vehicle.
