Captured rainfall usually needs some level of treatment before it can be considered potable. The amount of treatment is a case by case basis. Untreated rainwater can contain microbial contaminants, pollution from the air, and suspended solid particles.
Unfortunately, rain water can be contaminated by air pollution or microbes in the catchment area so it is a good idea to filter whatever rainwater you plan to drink.
