if we were building Electric Cars so long ago why did we stop?

Electric vehicles (some of the original models) were built a long time ago, but they were not widely adopted because of limited driving distance and long/frequent charging times needed. Also, there has not been enough interest (funding) and a big enough market for automakers to produce them on a wider scale.  That has changed in recent times with the improvement of battery technology. With improved battery technology, energy storage has increased (less charging time, longer driving range) and costs have lowered enough to make automakers build them for the larger market again.
