If we heat up compost piles will they work faster?

Heat and moisture really does help. If you have the right combination of brown and green waste, and a good activator, then the pile should heat up on it’s own. Having a well insulated bin will help. Make sure you are also turning the pile often. You need air to keep the pile from stinking.

Yes, heat and moisture greatly aid the decomposition process, there are many methods of doing this, all using natural sunlight. You can build your own recepticle but keep in mind, like stephan said that it needs to rotate, so if you are using one for a large scale compost project, you may want to invest in one.
