Actually, just replacing gas vehicles with electric ones will hardly save any oil at all (and no fossil fuels in general), as the electricity needed to power them will most likely come from the same oil. Plus there’s a good amount of fossil fuels spent during the manufacturing of those cars, which will actually cause an increase in oil consumption during the electric vehicle deployment. Now, assuming all the electricity to run the cars will come from renewables, we can reduce our consumption by 581 million gallons of gasoline per year, minus the oil that is necessary during the manufacture (and for replacement parts later).
