The biggest way in which a reduction of soda-drinking would better the environment is the lessened need for cans. Can production is a rather harmful process that involves mining and energy-intensive manufacturing processes. Furthermore, many people do not recycle their aluminum cans, which adds to landfill waste.
The environmental costs of farming corn to produce corn syrup (and manufacturing corn syrup) used in soda would also be greatly reduced. Agriculture takes up lots of fertilizer, lots of fuel, and lots of water. We must remember, though, that completely getting rid of ANY product would very well be better for the environment. The job costs of totally getting rid of the soda industry might not be worth it, though!
