Global warming caused by greenhouse gases holds grim implications for the human species. If left unchecked, global warming will cause higher sea levels worldwide that flood some of the most densely populated areas of the planet. Increased frequency of droughts will lead to worsening water shortages, and changing climates will affect the ability of many regions to grow the crops for food that have sustained them for hundreds of years. Global warming will also contribute to the northward spread of tropical diseases and the insect pests that carry them. There will be more dangerous heat waves, and larger and more frequent wildfires that threaten thousands of people. This is a sampling of some of the best-understood effects of global warming, but there are many other dangers associated with a changing climate as well. That’s why it’s so urgent that we begin reducing greenhouse gas emissions immediately.
