Threats to the animals environment are also factors in their endagered status. Certainly poaching is the preeminent threat to the animals. Were it that we ceased to attempt to protect them, I find it highly likely that they would ultimately be hunted to extinction.
The evidence is anecdotal, but if you take the Northern White Rhinceros as an example, this animal was all but hunted to extinction. The potential for poaching to eliminate a species within the wild is entirely real.
