Often new editions contain very little new information. A few things might be edited or replaced, but the old versions can still be useful. Many professors understand this and work around any differences in new editions. Plus buying used books is easier on your pocketbook and less wasteful.
Renting textbooks is a great way to save some money and save some trees. There is a company called Chegg that is the leader in textbook rentals which plants a tree for every book that is rented from them. Renting books means that fewer trees will be cut down to make new ones, which is especially good for textbooks which are updated every few years. Reusing textbooks rather than printing new ones for each student saves paper.
