If the United States switched to sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup in sodas and candies, would these foods be better or worse for the environment?

It would depend on where the sugar is coming from and what it is made. If it is traveling very far, that would add to carbon emissions. Some companies are starting to switch to sugar from sugar cane, which could lead to more pressure on the sugar cane farming in other countries. This could lead to more deforestation. If the US could grow alternative crops other than corn to produce sugar, that would be ideal.
