If someone hunts an elephant today for conservation what happens to the ivory?

The UN CITIES program allows for the legal auctioning of ivory that has been harvested from problem elephants or those that died of natural causes.  About one hundred tonnes of ivory has been auctioned off annually.  The goal of this program is to undermine the illegal sale of ivory.  However, it is not clear that it is preventing the illegal ivory trade.  Some conservationists even claim that it is encouraging poaching.
