If chicken is fresh do you have to worry about salmonella?

If chicken is fresh and properly stored, it’s less likely to make you sick, but it’s important to make sure all chicken is thoroughly cooked to make sure all potential salmonella bacteria are dead.

Yes.  Chickens can actually contract four different kinds of Salmonella.  In some cases the disease is very mild and so may go un-detected.

Modern poultry processors handle thousands of chickens each day.  When healthy chickens are processed in modern facilities, they may become contaminated with salmonella by coming in contact with water or other items in the plant that has become contaminated by contact with a diseased bird.

That is why it is VERY important that all poultry meat is cooked completely through.  Through cooking kills the bacteria.
