If forests are being cut down at an alarming rate, why isn’t wood expensive?

Wood is a plentiful resource. Many lumber and paper companies own the land on which they harvest trees, and they replenish their supply by planting more trees. Harvesting trees for wood isn’t a major problem, but deforestation in the rainforest is a great cause for concern. When rainforests are cleared out, ecosystems are disrupted and plant and animal species are put in danger.
