Done safely, no. Done unsafely, absolutely. Measure the ice, use an auger properly and if you don’t know how, find someone who does, who can teach you, and err on the side of putting less weight (i.e. not parking your truck there if you can help it) on the ice. Mark your hole, dress warmly, wear spikes on the bottom of your shoes, and listen for cracks in the ice. Have emergency blankets handy in case anyone falls in, and know the other protocol if someone falls through the ice. (Check that out here: http://adventure.howstuffworks.com/fall-through-ice.htm). In general, use your head at all times. As tempting as it may be to get drunk and crank up the satellite TV, you need to keep your wits about you….but if you do so, you should be fine.
