To help you decide, I would recommend a quick, entertaining and powerful read: Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams (the author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy). It’s all about going to see some of the most endangered species on Earth, in case they wont be around much longer.
There’s also a great site called Trazzler. It helps you plan your trip, but also has short pieces written by people who have been there, so you can get a taste of what the place is like. Link below.
Panama is a great place to visit! It is still quite reasonable because it has not become a huge tourist designation, but it offers a lot in nature, history, and culture. You can partake in organized tours or venture out on your own. They utilize the US dollar and many people speak English. You will thoroughly enjoy your visit!
