I want to recycle lead acid batteries my self – remove acid and salvage the lead. What is the process?

Lead grids, batteries, and other parts are cleaned and then smelted together in a furnace. The molten lead is then poured into molds. After a few minutes, the impurites float to the top and are scraped off. They are then left to cool and then sent off to battery manufacturers.
