Randy West and others at the National Center for Asphal Technology (NCAT) are reasearching ways to make asphalt greener. They have developed ways with the Alabama Department of Transportation to better test the quality of the lain asphalt, doing in three years what used to take fifteen years. They are working on mixing asphalt at lower temperatures, meaning lower energy use and improved conditions for workers. They are also working on recycling more materials into the asphalt.
