Is this not known for sure yet? I feel like there hasn’t been as much press about this as in year’s past?
El Nino was predicted for the winter of 2009 in July. It will have various effects depending on location. California should expect heavier rains, then north should expect less wintry climate, and Florida has a reduced risk of forest fires.
Also, not all El Nino events are extreme, which are usually the events that are publicized. Many El Nino events are relatively mild, and it is difficult to assess the strength of the upcoming El Nino until at least its beginning.
