I saw something about treating irrigation water with magnets, how does that work?

Water can be treated by magnets because the hydrogen ions and dissolved minerals in water become charged when the water is subjected to a magnetic field. This temporarily separates the water molecules from impurities and improves the flavor, making the water “soft.” Water is already subjected to the earth’s magnetic field, but during treatment and transportation the charge dissipates. The practice is somewhat controversial.
