Yes, it is not wise to use fake green plants. The better choice is to ask at your local nursery what plants are indigenous and drought tolerant in your neighborhood. Plant those and care for them while they’re young (in California planting before winter is good if you don’t get hard frost). After they mature and get established you should be able to go with never watering them, or just a tad on the hottest days.
