I live in southern ontario. Found a large black flying insect in my back yard. looks like a wasp. when it flies around just before it lands you can see a orange stripe at the top of it’s thorax, the rest of the thorax is black. curious to what it is.

the wings have a blue shimmer

    It may be a common thread waisted wasp. They are quite large, about 16-55mm and are found in various places in North America. They build their nest in the ground.
