I just read The Monkey Wrench Gang (best book ever!), and I’m wondering if there are any groups like that out there in real life?

Probably several, but the most infamous is Earth First! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_First! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_First!), which actually is inspired by that book.

The Rainforest Action Network (http://ran.org/) conducts several campaigns that are relevant as well, such as sittings on roads to protest mining and placing banners in obvious places.

And of course, Greenpeace is well known for their tactics too, such as their interactions with whaling vessels (http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/).

It is important to note that many groups do not advocate such practices as those used in the Monkey Wrench Gang (e.g. monkey wrenching and eco-terrorism) because they can actually be counterproductive. Some groups prefer to use open dialogues and efforts such as voting with one’s dollar as opposed to conducting acts that can harm both people and the environment.
