One reason recycling can be “bad” for the environment is because well-meaning consumers often toss in plastics that can’t be recycled, which fouls the system. Plastic bags, for example, gum up recycling machinery. But it takes only one-third the energy to make products from recycled plastic than from virgin materials. Others argue that since the big push to recycle we’ve started to use less durable packaging. For example, milk was once delivered in reusable glass and now the plastic milk containers can’t be reused.
