I always thought climbers on Everest died from exposure or altitude sickness. But this makes it sound like climbers can die from a drop in oxygen levels related to massive storms with low barometric pressures.

Is it true that storms on Everest can cause oxygen levels to drop so low that it kills the humans on the mountain at the time?

Unfortunately, you may be barking up the wrong tree. Until there is a study done to counter the new found evidence, there will not be a solid answer. I suggest you take the article that you read as a grain of salt, be objective, but do not disregard your skepticism.
