Is the hunt for new pharmaceuticals bad for the environment?

Probably not much worse than any other human activity. The thing is, if a company goes to the trouble of looking for ingredients for a new medication in the wilderness, they will probably take a reasonable amount of care not to harm the ecosystem in case they do find a valuable cure or substance. That way, they keep the potential to get a lot more.
