Fracking, or “hydraulic fracturing,” is a process to fracture the shale rock under the ground in which there are reserves of natural gas. Natural gas is a fossil fuel used mainly for heating homes. There are both advantages and disadvantages to fracking and natural gas on the whole. Some environmental concerns have to do with polluting aquifers and using chemicals harmful to the ground. Some advantages are moving away from burning coal and creating jobs in a recession.
