Hu Jintao, President of China, has recently expressed that reducing CO2 emissions will be a major goal of China, and pledged to decrease emissions significantly by 2020. While he neglected to mention what emissions target would actually be, it is expected that he will reveal more at the climate talks in Copenhagen this December. Currently China’s rapid development has made it the world’s biggest polluter; and while large efforts have been made to develop solar and wind projects, China still relies mainly on coal power and plans to continue opening coal power plants. Jintao has thus acknowledged China’s role in the global warming crisis; it remains to be seen if he is truly committed to changing it.
