Walmart’s sustainability index aims to force their suppliers to compete for placement and favorable treatment in stores based on the results of sustainability and environmental impact surveys they’ve been asked to complete. No specific details about the penalties for failing a survey have been announced, but Walmart claims that it intends to, “provide customers with product information in a simple, convenient, easy to understand manner so they can make choices and consume in a more sustainable way,” which likely means that signage will rate the manufacturer’s “green-ness” and hopefully the consumers will pick greener products once they’re easier to seek out.
