Unfortunately, greenwashing is likely to still happen to some degree. But by uniting, retailers aim to cut it down. Individually, companies are at greater risk for greenwashing because of the industry’s obscurity; some companies can claim to be green, and it would be difficult to find information to call them out on it. With the database in place, companies can collaborate and share information. They would also pool funds to gather more information about the retail industry. So, while the program likely won’t be perfect, the coalition’s collaboration is taking a great step in making the retail industry more environmentally friendly, and in opening information.
