A recent study done by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory concluded that plug-in vehicles could either require a major reboot of the electric grid or none at all – depending on when people choose to recharge their vehicles. If drivers were to charge their vehicles around 5pm, over 160 new power plants would be needed to accomodate the amount of power drawn at that time. However, if drivers were to charge up after 10pm, only 8 additional power plants would be needed nationwide.
