Smart grid technology is already helping New York City by preventing serious power blackouts and brownouts. ConEdison is NYC’s utility service, and the company used the technology to send radio signals to central air thermostats in 20,000 businesses and homes across the city. The signals forced the air conditioning to shut on and off every half hour. This procedure saved the city this summer by sparing 25 megawatts of energy during one peak time and preventing a blackout. The introduction of more smart grid technology over time will help cities like New York become more energy-efficient all the time.
