The first benefit of renewables is that they do not produce greenhouse gases. Ceasing to produce these gases is the only way we can stop the effects of climate change. Second, coal fired power plants have been found to release particulars that pollute the air of surrounding environments leading to increased cases of asthma and other respiratory ailments. Finally, the extraction of fossil fuels is usually very destructive to the environment as well, if you look at mountain removal mining for coal or oil drilling in the rain forest or off-shore. Renewables will avoid these effects as well.
