I think the biggest factor is that it must not cater to corporations anymore. Engineering must be to help out the human race, not help the profit and dividends of corporations. Additionally, it must advance at a rapid pace and there must be more engineers to make sustainability a reality.
Engineering will have to be tailored to reduce the amount of raw materials that are needed. This will have to happen because our main source of energy (oil) will soon run out. Engineers must also begin to model new technology after nature. Nature creates many example of integrative, yet simple solutions that have been proven for millions of years. These systems should be the creative wellspring of ideas that are at the forefront of engineer’s minds as we enter the post industrial age.
