Google’s deforestation technology was unveiled at Copenhagen but wasn’t used in any particular way there. It will be utilized by policymakers and leaders to help them understand how to conform to the UN’s Reducing Emissions from Deforestation in Developing Countries (REDD) standards. For the most part, though, it is for the average person to check out the state of the world’s forests by simply going online. The main connection with Copenhagen, besides the fact that the technology was shown there, is that it can be used to implement a widely-supported idea that countries that discourage and reduce deforestation could receive compensation, and the only way to truly monitor deforestation’s decline is with a tool like this one from Google.
