Good question, delilahjones. California is known for their strict emissions laws, and the new mandate is more of the same. The new mandate calls for California to reduce petroleum dependence by 20 percent by 2020, and also requires that all gasoline and diesel sold in the state be 10 percent less carbon intensive by 2020. There has been some opposition to the new mandates from truckers who feel they are being too strict. In response to the lawsuit, Mary Nichols, chairwoman of the California Air Resources Board, said that the new mandate is “a critical tool to help us break our dependence on fossil fuels.” By breaking our dependence on fossil fuels and using more renewable energies, the environment will be a cleaner place which will help offset global warming, and improve our health.
Hope this helps!
