How will Brazil’s proposed Bel Monte Dam affect indigenous Brazilians living in the Amazon?

The Belo Monte reservoir will flood 400 square kilometers of agricultural lands and forests, displacing thousands of Juruna families. Furthermore, construction of the Belo Monte is opening the way for additional dams that will affect even more indigenous people. The natives will be losing their agricultural lands, fish supply, and to a certain degree their cultural identity. The construction will further leave them vulnerable to disease and encroachment by additional industries such as mining and timber harvesting.
